Hello! We are Jan and Bob Mayr. Applegarth Border Collies was founded in 1988 with the addition of Jan's first purebred Border Collie, Applegarth's Joyous Garde (Kastle)(A Pulfer's Shep/Nan grandson). From working stock, he gave Jan her love of the working bred Border Collie. He earned titles in obedience, herding and agility, showing just how versatile the breed could be. Kastle was the original foundation of our breeding program. He was bred by Eve Marschark and Jan is forever grateful that Eve had the faith in her to get her started in the breed.
In 1994, "I" became "we" when I married my best friend. It was a case of love me, love my dogs and he did. When I took him to a freezing cold sheepdog clinic in the dead of winter, in the snow, when we were dating and he actually called for another date afterwards, my friends told me that he was a keeper. Eighteen plus years later, he is an integral part of Team Applegarth. Bob likes to call himself the "chief dog walker, baggage handler and taxi driver" aka "unpaid kennel help". I couldn't do it without him.
Our breeding program was established on very simple principles. We believe that the Border Collie must be kept a true working dog and that only dogs that have that ability should be part of our breeding program. All of our dogs come from working lines. We have bred on a very limited basis. We do not breed for a sport, such as agility/flyball or obedience, or for conformation as we believe that Border Collies should not be exhibited in the breed ring. We breed for working ability, temperament and physical soundness. We currently have no breeding plans.
